Indy – Adopting A Senior Great Dane

indyJeffrey and Michelle volunteered to pick up this sweet senior girl at the Merced shelter and do foster care.  Of course you all know what happened……they fell in love and kept her!  Here is what Jeffrey wrote to us about the benefits of adopting a senior dog:  “Some people avoid fostering/adopting older dogs.  I would like to speak up for these wonderful experienced older puppies.  My wife and I have adopted several older pups and would not trade our experiences for anything.  As adult experienced dogs, they have full rich personalities which with a little bit of loving care, can emerge and blossom. We never have all the time we want with our dogs no matter how long they live.  To not adopt because you will only have these great ones a few years is both very selfish (you rescue/adopt for THEM, not just yourself) and shortsighted (a few years with a spectacular dog is so rewarding).  If you get a puppy can you guarantee that you will not have medical or life issues that will cause that dog to be displaced?  Indy, the ten year old Great Dane we adopted recently, was dumped at the Merced shelter.  She is in great shape and plays like a puppy (a bit slower though).  She is sweet, very affectionate, friendly with all and smart.  In fact we have never bonded with a dog as fast as with Indy.  If we only have six months or a year with her, we will cherish that time and have a wonderful year and Indy gets the loving home she needs.  The real reason we all rescue/foster/adopt is for THEM!  Don’t be afraid of a shorter time dog, hopefully you will give them a chance and then you will find out how much joy both you and your new older pup will experience.  Woof!”
