Throwback Thursday Post (even though it is Friday….)

Katie Stowe sent me this great 1973 photo of her and her first Great Dane. I have been meaning to post it on a Thursday and title it “Throwback Thursday”, but I always seem a day late. So what the heck, I am just posting it today and you all please just pretend it is Thursday and enjoy this cute photo. Also see the other posts of “General” who is Katie’s 6/12 year old boy she adopted from us. What a great dog he is!

General who seems to love just about anyone!

Violet and Balou and Tony too!

Tony Rovegno sent these great photos of his kids, Violet and Balou. Violet was adopted as a puppy from us (one of the very few we ever get in) and then Tony came back for Balou. Quite a blue matched set! Come meet Tony and Violet at the donation barbecue on September 3rd. e!

“Donation Barbecue”

Great Dane Rescue of Northern California is having a “donation barbecue” on Sunday, September 10th 2 pm to 5 pm. The wonderful owners of Beer Revolution in Oakland (464 3rd Street between third and Broadway in the Jack London Square area) have chosen us to be their charity of choice for September 3rd. They routinely host donation barbecues to benefit local charities. An employee of Beer Revolution and former all around wonderful foster care person Josie Rovegno nominated us. This establishment is dog friendly, and has a nice outside patio where dogs and their owners can mingle, eat barbecue and (hopefully) donate to Rescue. Many types of beers available for purchase, as well as soft drinks. Parking is easy, Sunday’s are “free meter” days and there is also a parking garage a block away. So if you have nothing to do on September 10th and want to come meet rescued Great Danes and the people who have adopted them, swap stories with other adopters, or just come support our organization, you are welcome. Hope to see you there! Free t-shirts and other dog/Dane stuff! Any questions, please email Colleen at [email protected]

Ellie and Stella

Here are two cute photos sent to us by Jill and here is what she said: “The girls have settled in and seem happy. We are certainly happy. They are good through the night and they play during the day. They love to choose from the toy basket. Jack loves that they like to play. He’s never seen two big dogs play and jump around like they do. So glad now I did not separate them. They get along so well. It melts everyone’s heart to see Stella rest her head on Ellie when they are relaxing. Pretty sweet.”

Stella, Ellie and the Injured Deer

We recently received this photo from Jill and Ron who adopted Stella and Ellie from us. Here is the accompanying text:

“Oh! I wanted to tell you the girls were playing in the yard and my husband Ron notice that all of a sudden there were three animals, instead of the two. He looked closer aand realized it was a deer! The deer was clearly not enjoying the “fun” as the girls were. He was just their size too! Ron got the girls inside the house and called the wildlife rescue who came out and collected the injured deer. It was quite the neighborhood excitement though. All the neighbors were lined up along our fence as the event unfolded.”

We asked for further clarification from Jill as to whom injured the deer….the girls or something else. Ron said the girls were trying to play nicely with an already injured deer. Good to know!

“To All Who Only Want To Adopt A Great Dane Under Two Years Old”

Be care what you ask for! Everyone wants a less than two year old Great Dane. Remember they are still pretty much a puppy up to two years and some can be destructive (see photos above). Crates are used as a training tool, not to contain your Dane for long periods to protect your home. Cages are for gerbils and hamsters! If you are not home enough to train a puppy, please don’t pass on a Dane older than two.

(Thanks to Karen for posting this with the accompanying photos of Michael and Ellie….and Karen was only gone for 30 minutes!)

Cleo Curtis

Cleo Curtis

Just could not resist posting this cute photo of Cleo. Thanks to Ellie Curtis for allowing me to post this. It seems Cleo just assumed this position in the car one day and now it is normal to her! (Just heard that Cleo’s Mom Ellie is today graduating from Montana State. Congratulations!)

Farewell Sweet Carson

Our hearts go out to Russ and Dorothy after the passing of their beloved Carson. Karen remembers them coming to Reno in 2008 to meet a stray she was fostering. They sat on the floor in her living room for about 20 minutes, coaxing this shy boy to come by them. Karen watched their patience and their reaction when he finally came up to them. She knew this was the family for Carson. We guessed his age to be three, so he had a long, wonderful life. We thank them for that.

Here is what Dorothy wrote to us: “I am so grateful for having had the chance to have him be a part of my life. He leaves a lot of people who loved him too much. Everyone has been better to have known him, and they are all grieving his loss. I know he is running like a freight train and eating everything I would not allow. My son is sure he is chowing on bowls of deer poop! I am so very lucky that you took a chance on us, and I hope you know that he gave us more happiness and joy than I can ever express.”

Logan

Logan

Received this cute photo from Laura and Dan, new parents to Logan.

“We have a new thing now, he won’t get in my car at 5 pm when we are ready to leave work. He can be the most stubborn thing when he wants. I had three people try to get in the car. Come to find out, if I move my car to the shade, turn the a/c on and let the vehicle cool down, he will jump right in. If too hot, no way! When I bring Logan to work and I want to keep the front door open for cool air, I just put that broom in the photo across the doorway and Logan will not cross it! I think he knows he could if he wanted to, but he is a good boy.”

Thanks to Laura and Dan for this update.

Road Trip Anyone?

Road Trip Anyone?

Ellie (blue girl) now races with Michael and Stella to see who can get into the car faster. She is still looking for a wonderful home. To find more photos and information on this lovely blue girl, go to her bio on the Adoptable page.
