Millie – Taken Too Young

Millie – Taken Too Young

We received this sad note yesterday from Sinee and her family letting us know of MIllie’s passing. Millie came into rescue as an older puppy with her brother. Millie was lucky enough for the Halladay family to come meet her and take her home. Here is what Sinee wrote:

” I am writing you with the heaviest heart to share that we lost Millie last Friday, September 20, 2019. It was a very sudden loss as we were out on our walk and she collapsed on the sidewalk. She was 2 months short of celebrating her 7th birthday with us. Our family is devastated but wanted to take a moment to thank you for choosing us to love her 6 plus years ago. She made our family complete. We cherished every moment we were blessed to have with her. Thank you for doing all that you do.  All the best,  Sinee, Eric, Austin and Amara Halladay “

Best Dog In The World

Best Dog In The World

Thanks to Julie Meyer, Maggie’s mother, for sending in this touching tribute to her girl. Maggie truely was the best dog in the world.

Maggie Meyer:       B: 12/15/12  D: 9/23/19

Where do I start when describing the years I’ve had with the most beautiful Dane ever? She came into our lives in the spring of 2015 and warmed our hearts with her sweet and mellow spirit. She loved everyone, human, canine, feline and equine.  I could trust her with all the animals and fowl on our little farm.

She had the most strong devotion to me in particular, which I returned equally.

She was my best-est girl.

Maggie suffered from medical issues before and after I adopted her, she never let that her drag her down. Pneumonia almost took her from me not quite 2 years ago, but excellent vet care and her fighting spirt gave us this extra time. She was far too young to die from Lymphoma, and I will miss her always. My gratitude knows no limits to Colleen and Great Dane Rescue of Northern California- who supported Maggie and me unwaveringly through all her health issues.

If the best dogs could live forever- she’d never have left me.

Cause, she was the absolute Best.

Love you always my darling girl.

Winston!

Winston is STILL looking for a wonderful new home. This is a very sweet dog who unfortunately isn’t the male supermodel of Great Danes. But he has a great personality! Take a second look!

Gracie

Gracie

Our sincere condolences to Maxine Gutzman on the loss of her beloved Gracie. Everytime we post a memorial, we think back on our own Dane losses and our hearts go out to others who lose a beloved Great Dane. Here is what Maxine wrote about her girl Gracie:

“This is one of of my greatest sorrows. My love Gracie passed away September 3, 2019. She truly was the love of my life.  She got me through the passing of my husband and two huge moves. Every night I tucked her in with her blankie in my bed. She slept beside me for the last four years.  We always traveled together. She had wonderful manners and was always invited to my friends with me.  I am so heartbroken.  After spending thousands I couldn’t save her.”

Opal Update

Opal Update

Opal’s owner, Roberta Dishno, sent us this nice update on her girl Opal. Opal had some medical issues just after adoption, and Roberta and her husband were very nice in working with us to resolve these and not returning Opal! We appreciate their commitment to this sweet girl. Here is what Roberta wrote about Opal:

“I want to thank you for trusting us with Opal. I can’t believe it’s been almost 3 years. Opal has turned into one great dog that we take hiking, over to friends houses, and can introduce to other dogs. She still acts like a puppy but is starting to get some gray hairs in her face.

She’s become an only dog in the house and seems to enjoy it. We moved to Placerville on a few acres last year and she loves chasing lizards, squirrels and anything else that comes in our yard. She always seems to be happy and can put on the cutest face when it’s time for her walks (2nd photo is a view from my desk). We also discovered that she is a fan of my alma mater (Arizona State). She loves this ASU mascot pillow and carries/sleeps with it everywhere in the house.

Thanks again for all work that you and the team does at GDRNC! “

Downward Facing Dog?

Downward Facing Dog?

Clifford’s owner, Sherri, sent us a photo of her “yogi Clifford doing chair yoga”. At nine years young, I guess yoga is one of the reasons Clifford is in such good shape. Something to think about…..

Thanks to Doug for adopting Chloe and obviously giving her a wonderful new home. Chloe’s brother Kepler is also thriving in his new home, so the siblings are both in good places!

You Can Be Pregnant and Own a Great Dane!

You Can Be Pregnant and Own a Great Dane!

We have SO many people contact us wanting to give up their Great Dane because they are expecting a baby and as we all know “you can’t have a baby and a Great Dane”. Or at least that is what most people seem to think. So we publish this cute little story and these great photos to tell you, it can be done!

Tony comes from a family that has a long history with our group. His parents, John and Tracy, were a long time foster care family and Tracy created our first website and managed it. So when Tony and Stephanie contacted us looking for a sister for their boy Baloo (they had lost their young girl Violet recently to a heart attack) we did not hesitate to place Opal with them, even though we knew they were expecting a baby soon. Fast forward a few weeks later and “Grandma Tracy” calls to say Stephanie ended up having an unexpected home birth with Tony delivering his son and the two Great Danes standing in the doorway watching!

Tracy says both dogs absolutely love the baby and all is going just fine. I guess this story disproves the myth that babies and Great Danes cant coexist in the same home!

Thanks to Sherri Lane for always sending such “artsy” photos of her skinny boy Clifford. (that is his official name…) She is so good at being creative with her photography.

Roxie

Roxie

We received this great photo from Scott and Liz Harrison about their girl Roxie (formerly Scarlet) and their visit to Monterey. (Rescue Danes are everywhere!)

“When we were visiting Monterey we had a lady inquire about our Dane.  We told her we had adopted Roxie from GDRNC a little over a year ago. Surprised, she told us she had adopted two Danes a little over a year ago from GDRNC also. So I just wanted to drop you a note to update you on how well Roxie is doing and thank you for giving us a great addition to our family.  As you can tell by the picture; she is a bit of a clown but always is watching over us.”
