Happy Birthday Stevie!!

WONDERFUL photo of Stevie Cook celebrating her seventh birthday. Her parents, Glen and Gayle, always send us wonderful photos, but this takes the cake! (couldn’t resist) Here is what Gayle wrote to us on Stevie’s big day: “Our Stevie is seven years old today and she is in great shape. She loves running the trails (along with her Dane brother Bodie, of course) on our daily hikes and has perfected the skill of being a Gold Medal Couch Potato. Additionally, we think the grey hair around her eyes is quite stylish. She does too. She also loves sun bathing which is what she was up to when I took this photo. We are truly grateful to have these two Danes. Stevie has been a part of our family for over two years now. She and Bodie are such a joy to us. We are filled with gratitude to have them in our lives. Thank you GDRNC!!”

Again, we say WE are so lucky that Stevie and Bodie are in such a fantastic home. Thank you Glen and Gayle.

Donated Cancer Medications

>Katie Knight wrote to us letting us know she has medications to donate to a Great Dane who could use them. Here is what she wrote:

Anyway, thought we could send them to someone in need if you knew of anyone treating their Danes with this prescription. We filled the prescription right before Norman’s passing in 2017. The pills are good through 12/19. “

Thank you Katie for your generous offer to help another Dane in need.

Bodhi’s Trainer Information

After Gayle Cook wrote about her experience with her Great Dane Bodhi, and how a trainer really helped with his issues, many people asked for the name of the trainer. Here is the information Gayle provided us:

NexGen K9, Rob Peladeau (Behaviorist/Trainer and Owner), (415) 496-9787 or [email protected]. Website: www.NexGenK9.com

Barr Estate Winery

Thanks to Tealy and Greg Barr, owner-operators of Barr Estate Winery in Paso Robles, for sending another nice donation to Rescue from the sales of their “Dane Head” wine. Tealy and Greg, adoptors themselves, always think of Rescue and give a portion of the sales of the Dane Head wine to Rescue.

If you are looking for a fun Father’s Day wine tasting trip, check out their winery in Paso Robles and enjoy a bottle of Dane Head!

Maggie Doesn’t Have Cancer!

Maggie Doesn’t Have Cancer!

Yay! I know this seems like an odd post, but I received a text from Maggie’s sainted owner, Julie Meyer, who said they were waiting on biopsy results from some large lumps/sores on the inside and outside of Maggie’s jaw. Maggie suffers from Canine Leproid Granuloma syndrome which just won’t permanently go away! Julie has Maggie on “cytopoint” injections to help with her allergies, but Maggie still has outbreaks of the CLG which cause very ugly lesions to grow on her face. Well, Julie just let me know that the biopsy came back “NO CANCER”, but rather a hypersensitivity allergic reaction in her lymphatic system. We celebrate this good news because Maggie is probably the best dog in the whole wide world. She has the best temperament I’ve seen and is so loving. She came into Rescue a mess, we thought we cleared her up (many vet visits, amputating her ear and part of her tail, months of different antibiotics, etc.) only to find out after Julie adopted her that the CLG was still hanging on. Julie has been dealing with this for years and just loving her Dane and not blaming us!(although we feel VERY guilty). So today is a day to celebrate a wonderful Dane and her wonderful owner and wish them many years together. Thank you Julie!

Maggie and her latest CLG bump on her lip and the photo below is a recent swelling of the right side of her face. The fun never stops!

Emerson – Rest In Peace

Emerson – Rest In Peace

Our condolences to Despina and John on the loss of their sweet boy Emerson who died suddenly from a stroke. Here is what Despina wrote about her special guy:

“Emerson was just about to turn 5 when he died on April 29, 2019. He was a sweet, gentle soul whose favorite thing in life was going to the beach and jumping into the ocean. “

Bodie’s Story

Bodie’s Story

Bodie’s owners, Gayle and Glen, wrote the narrative below to hopefully help other Dane owners who in the future go through a similar experience. We thank them for sticking it out and doing what needed to be done to keep Bodie with them in their home.

“Perhaps this story might help others.  Our Bodie Boy has been a wonderful, loving Dane, who we adopted from GDRNC a year and a half ago, at one year of age.  He loves playing with our grandchildren and is a master cuddler with anyone who will let him in their laps.  But, with time, he had become overly protective… mostly with UPS vans.  He thought he was doing his job.  Then, one day, he actually bit a driver.  This was unacceptable. We could not imagine having a dog that bites.  But, we also could not imagine having Bodie taken from our family.  We took action right away. We hired a dog trainer, one who came highly recommended. Bodie learned quickly.  As a result, he has been transformed.  It is remarkable.  He is also a happier boy. Our trainer told us that it is stressful (and not healthy) for Bodie when he gets worked up in this protective mode. We will continue to work with Bodie to reinforce what we have learned with his training, to ensure he will never slip back. We now have the gift of this well mannered, remarkable Dane, who now also walks beautifully on a leash.  We get to continue to experience the joy of this loving, fun, and very entertaining boy, for years to come. The bonus… our laps are never empty with our two lap dog Danes, Bodie and Stevie.  It gets no better.
Training and effort sure paid off for Bodie, and definitely for us.”

Another great photo of Stevie cuddling to her owner’s grandson. This was a Dane whom we knew nothing about when she came into rescue. So glad she ended up being a loving girl. Thanks to Gayle and Glen for sending us these photos routinely.

Wonderful photo of Harley in her 15 acres of heaven! Thanks to her new owner, Toni, for adopting this very sweet fawn girl. Everyone who met Harley loved her.

Rest In Peace Sweet Lexie

Rest In Peace Sweet Lexie

Dana recently let us know her girl Lexie passed away. Here is what Dana wrote to us:

“We adopted sweet Lexie from you 5 years ago and two weeks ago we had to say goodbye to her. I still remember the pitiful “coming soon” picture on your website of her at the Yolo Animal Control where she weighed in at 71 lbs because the previous family had starved her almost the death. I couldn’t sleep that night thinking about her sad eyes and emailed you the next morning as I knew she had to be ours. I worried that she’d have lots of health problems from her abuse but all we did was feed her and give her lots of love to return her to the heathy state you see in this photo.

“Lexie could have easily held a grudge against all humans due to her being mistreated but instead she was the sweetest dog who gave unconditional love to us each and every day. We will miss her more than words can express and want to thank you for helping get her out of the terrible situation she was in so we could make the last 5 years of her life so much better than her first 5 years were.”

The McNulty family.

We remember Lexie and the horrible condition she was in. It takes a special person to see past the physical and adopt a Dane that needs a loving home. Thank you Dana!
